Coney Island: Brooklyn, New York
The aroma of hot dogs, popcorn, and freshly made funnel cakes brought back wonderful childhood memories of when my parents took my siblings and me on a family vacation. The screams and laughter filled the air because people who dared to go on the roller coaster ride at the Coney Island Amusement Park could do nothing else but do just that. The atmosphere was lively and fun with New Yorkers and visitors who chose to spend the day at this action pack yet relaxing attraction.
“Traveling to New York to go to Coney Island this summer has been one of the best decisions my husband, and I made,” said Amy, a Tourist who was visiting from Los Angeles, California.
Meanwhile, Karen who is a New Yorker stated that spending hot summer days at the Coney Island Beach is one of her favorite past times.
Yes, indeed everyone was friendly and welcoming.
When I arrived at Coney Island, there were people everywhere. Shortly after my arrival, I purchased a bite to eat. There was a Nathan’s Hot Dog Restaurant that sold hot dogs with a large variety of toppings. My personal favorite is hot dog topped with onions and paired with cheese fries and bacon. It wasn’t the best meal for a healthy diet, but I enjoyed every moment of this rare indulgence.
Afterwards, I started walking towards the Coney Island Boardwalk. On my way there, parallel on both sides of the street was the rides from the amusement park. The roller coasters looked intimidating. They were extremely high, and some of them looped in the air. I didn’t go on any of them. However, I did check out the live performances on the boardwalk.
It was great! The crowd was dancing to salsa music while a local band kept people entertained with their musical talents. I chimed in dancing along to the rhythm and my dance partner showed me how to do a few easy steps. My moves were alright for an amateur salsa dancer. Further down the boardwalk was another performer who was singing songs from the late Michael Jackson. He indeed drew a crowd as he performed some of the pop star’s famous songs while playing his guitar. People sang along to the music and clapped loudly at the end of each of his performances.
Separately, there were Hip Hop Dancers, who twirled on their heads and did other intricate dance steps. There was also a group of drummers who performed different musical selections. Voluntarily, onlookers began dancing to the beat of the African Drums. Directly in front of the boardwalk, was Coney Island Beach.
The sand stretched for miles, and it seemed endless. It reminded me of a beach in Jacksonville, Florida. There weren’t a lot of people who were swimming in the water. However, there was hardly an inch on the sand that did not have sunbathers. Some people were having a family picnic beach day, others were reading a book and the rest were meeting up with friends for drinks on the beach. For miles, there were lots of colorful umbrellas, beach toys, and music coming from small portable radios. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. To my surprise, Coney Island Beach was clean. There was no liter in sight.
On the boardwalk, there were restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops. There were long lines that moved rapidly as the cashiers worked quickly to serve each customer. The weather was sunny, and the temperature was hot. Therefore, I had ice cream from an ice cream shop and ate it with my funnel cake. I certainly had a sweet tooth, and I enjoyed every moment of it. I spent my entire day at Coney Island, and as the night came in, the warm temperature dropped, and the air was a bit chilly. Luckily for me, I packed a light sweater.
Overall, I had an awesome time at Coney Island! The amusement park, the food, the live entertainment on the boardwalk and the relaxation of Coney lsland Beach was more than my fair share of fun for one day! I would recommend that you visit there on your next trip to Brooklyn, New York.
