The Sunbury Plantation House: St. Philip, Barbados
Have you ever toured an authentic plantation house located in the Western Hemisphere? Well now is your chance. Sunbury Plantation House in St. Philips, Barbados is breath-taking. Beautifully decorated, the Great House consisted of Barbadian antiques, custom-made mahogany wood furniture and artifacts that preserve the history while capturing how people lived 300 years ago.
Upon entering, I was greeted by a tour operator who guided me through the living room, dining room and kitchen. The large windows allowed fresh breeze to enter in and it kept all of the rooms very cool. One of my favorite places in the house was a room that was used solely for the evolution of technology.
Some of the featured items were shelves storing the oldest to the newest cameras, typewriters, video cameras and much more. Each piece was used in its perspective period, while still evolving into something better and faster with upgraded features. To date, the evolution of technology continues to change all the time. After exploring this room, I headed upstairs and checked out the bedrooms.
The bedrooms were gorgeous. There were canopy beds, vanity tables, closets, drawers and mirrors. All of the furniture was all fabulously designed and of course, made from mahogany wood. The vanity table and the canopy bed were among my favorite pieces in the room. The children room was very nice also. There were twin beds, a play area, a crib and shelves that filled with dolls adorned in dresses that were appropriate for that era. When I finished touring the upstairs, I headed down to the basement.
The basement was filled with horse-drawn carriages. This was used as transportation centuries ago. The room next to it was the kitchen. There were stoves, ovens, utensils, barrels, etc. The items were made out of cast iron. The kitchen led to the yard.
Outside was quiet and peaceful. The lawn was filled with a small garden, a large sleeping willow tree and a trail that led to the open-air bar. The bartender served up the traditional rum punch made with local rum. The main ingredients were rum and passion fruit juice. The beverage was refreshing and delicious.
Overall, I had a great time touring The Sunbury Plantation House!
