Cape Disappointment State Park: IIwaco, Washington
Cape Disappointment…what a disappointing trip…No, I am just kidding. The Cape Disappointment State Park, located southwest of the coastal towns of llwaco, Washington, is a famous camping ground with 1,183 miles of tall forest trees with a fresh pine scent and a beachfront that is formed by the Pacific Ocean.
For all you beach goers, leave your swimsuits at home because signs are prohibiting you from swimming. However, bring your fishing rod because this park is a fisherman’s dream. Once you have a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife license, you can go crabbing, clamming, freshwater fishing and salt water fishing. Unfortunately, I did not have one. Therefore, I watched the fishermen patiently wait for the capture of a fish. Afterwards, I went on a tour at the Fort Canby and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Museum.
I have watched many World War II movies. Therefore, it was fascinating to explore Fort Canby and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Museum. The fort had a lot of open space with canons stationed along the wall. I pictured myself, preparing to load the cannon, standing guard behind a machine gun, and strategizing the next attack against the enemy. It was great! It brought back memories of my childhood when my brother and I used to play with his plastic army figurines. However, the activities that once took place at this fort was far from a game. It was a tragic reality. Many soldiers perished either at sea or on land. After my mini-tour, I hiked to the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse.
The hike was lengthy, breezy, shaded and for the most part enriching. Along the trail, I saw a wide array of plants, and occasionally I saw some deer. Once I arrived at the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, the doors were locked. Therefore, I walked around outside. The view from the lighthouse stretched as far as the horizon. It was something peaceful and serene about watching the Pacific Ocean waves crashing onto the rocks. I took one last look at my tranquil surroundings and then hiked back to my car.
I recommend that if you have not visited The Cape Disappointment State Park, then please do!
