Alfombra Roja on St. Thomas, United States Virgin Islands was a very fun and spirited event! It was held at The Menos, which is a dance hall among the Latin community who are from the Dominican Republic.
The event was organized by Cristobal Frances, Host of the popular radio show Super Tarde Latina on 105 JAMZ. Latin Singer Black Diamond and I were both special guests. The theme of the event required event goers to dress elegantly.
When I arrived, I walked on the red carpet that led to the entrance of The Menos. The place was beautifully decorated with red and silver balloons. The small round tables were dressed with a silver or red cloth with red confetti on top of it. The high chairs were a solid red, lime green, black and white. Alfombra Roja was a Latin style red carpet affair.
However, despite the decor and the flyer advertisement, there were only a small amount of people who were dressed elegantly. The majority of the people wore very casual clothing. The men wore jeans with t-shirts and the women wore short dresses that could not be worn at a cocktail hour. I was rather surprised that the overall attire of the people did not reflect the elegant theme of the event.
Nonetheless, the event was full of life! There were lots of couples who went on the dance floor and moved to the rhythm of popular Latin tunes. Naturally, I danced as well and I had a ball. I was unofficially taught how to dance bachata, salsa and merengue from different dance partners. Alfombra Rojo was in full swing and the place was packed with people.
The crowd roared when Black Diamond eventually performed. People were bobbing their heads and singing along to his music. Some of his songs were “Bailame Empinga Pa’tra,” “Tu Kiere Lena,” “Tu Piel Morena,” “Una Delincuente en Mi Party” and “Ella Kiere k Me Pegue.” It was obvious that he did an excellent job captivating the audience because he kept their attention throughout his entire performance. Great job Black Diamond!
Overall, Alfombra Roja was a fun event.
