Intimate Dining at Spaha Soul Restaurant: East Harlem, New York
As soon as I entered into the Spaha Soul Restaurant, I was greeted with a warm hello from Chef Artist Thornton. It was like stepping into a home of a childhood friend whom I have known for a long time.
Intimate, comfortable and serene describes the ambiance of this cozy little restaurant that seats approximately 20 people. The smooth Jazz and R & B music and the quietness of the atmosphere was subtly refreshing. I was able to think, mediate and reflect on the events of my day without the distraction of loud in-distinctive chatter that usually dominates the music being played in a restaurant.
The decor was beautiful. Red, orange, beige, white and yellow are the colors of Spaha Soul. The glass tables, and the cushioned solid red or flower patterned chairs added to the feeling that I was dining at home. The lights were slightly dimmed and the entrance door completely shut out the noise of the busy city streets. The environment was totally relaxing.
After a short wait of 30 minutes, out came the appetizer! It was served by Chef Thornton, himself! I had tilapia that was breaded and seasoned with the freshest ingredients made from scratch. The fish was paired with crispy bright green string beans. It was delicious.
Next came out the most scrumptious pork chop, I have ever ate in my life. It was topped with a green Mexican chili sauce and brussel sprouts that were cut in halves. The juicy, tender and strategically decorated pork chop sat on top of some good old fashion grits. My goodness, the aroma from this meal was seductive and my taste buds were thoroughly satisfied; all the way down to my last bite. This meal was superb!
Then came out the southern buttermilk fried chicken with garlic mashed potatoes. The chicken was crispy on the outside. It was tender, juicy and succulent on the inside. Every bite was mouth-watering. The garlic mashed potatoes was equally pleasing. It was cheesy, fluffy and soft. I enjoyed this dish as well.
For dessert I had a large slice of chocolate cake. The cake was moist, tender and chocolaty. There was a combination of rum, chocolate and other flavors. It was very unique and tasty.
That concluded my food taster. All of the meals was made from scratch and it was a good portion of food on the plate. Although, Chef Thornton has a strong background in Louisiana cooking, the fusion of a variety of cultures was delivered with every bite. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own liquor drinks or a drink of your choice. Chef Thornton will serve it to you in the appropriate glasses along with your meal.
Dining at Spaha Soul is like eating in your own home. Chef Thornton was a wonderful host, cook and waiter. Yes, amazingly, he literally runs the restaurant by himself. This adds to the intimacy of the atmosphere. If you have to use the restroom, don’t be alarmed by the writings on the wall. Those are the signatures of guests who shared their dining experiences. Naturally, I signed my autograph as well.
At Spaha Soul, my time spent there was delightful. I highly recommend that you treat your taste buds to the delectable meals served at this little cozy restaurant in East Harlem.

When you go to all these exotic beautiful places, i hope you don’t have to eat alone! I don’t know how you keep that good figure with all that great food! I’m hoping one day you will finally write a book about all your travels and I’ll be the first one to get a copy. It would be a book where you could read one great place after another!
