Depoe Bay: Lincoln County, Oregon
Close your eyes and imagine driving endlessly along on a highway that is parallel to the Pacific Ocean.
You can feel the cool breeze that gently caresses your hair. You can taste the sea salt on your tongue. You can hear the ocean waves crashing on the cliffs and the cries from the sea gulls gliding in the sky. Your nostrils are consumed with the scent of pine from the pine trees that lines the highway.
Wonderful! Now slowly open your eyes and take in the scenery because we are driving along the Central Oregon Coast and our final destination is Depoe Bay in Lincoln County, Oregon.
I never knew that there were beautiful bays on the Central Oregon Coast. Depoe Bay has sturdy sand, which is smooth and flat. The pure white sand is free of footprints and the ocean waves glides graciously on it. The water, however, was ice cold and somewhat unfriendly.
There were signs posted everywhere warning visitors to beware of sneaker waves. Those are large waves that tend to sneak up on you and can potentially pull you out to the Pacific Ocean. Oh! Oh! Watch out before you find yourself swimming with the whales! At Depoe Bay you can also see the Devil’s Punch Hole. This is an isolated body of water that is encircled by surrounding cliffs.
Believe it or not the bay was empty so my friends and I felt as though we were on a luxurious getaway on a private bay! That was great. Due to the high winds and chilly weather I was not dressed in a swimsuit instead I wore jeans, sneakers and a light jacket.
Despite the weather, Depoe Bay was very picturesque. The sun shone brightly over the Pacific Ocean. Unlike the bays in the United States Virgin Islands, the water is not crystal clear. Therefore, if you dare to go for a swim you can not see your foot once you step in. However, I took my chances and ran my fingers through the waves. I took pictures and simply had a good time.
In addition to hanging out at the bay, you can also go whale watching! I didn’t go on the actual charter but I stood from the top of the cliff and watched as a pod of whales came up for air. The people on the boat took pictures right away. Although, it seems to be intriguing to be that close to the whales, I preferred watching them from where I standing.
Afterwards, I went shopping in the county, bought freshly made taffy from a Taffy Shop and ate a delicious clam chowder from a seafood diner.
My drive along the Central Oregon Coast was amazingly fun!
