Touring the Romney Manor: St. Kitts and Nevis
The Romney Manor is one of the most historic and elegant places to visit. It is located on the Old Road, Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis. The land is decorated with a wide variety of colorful flowers, plants, bushes and trees. The grounds are similar to an extensive garden with paths that are designed and shaped by the plant life located on both sides of the walkway. The sweet scents from the flowers permeated the air, while the large branches from the trees kept this enchanted garden perfectly cool.
According to the plaque located at the entrance of the Romney Estate, the origins date from the year 1626. After the Caribe Indian Massacre, the Europeans took over this location. Eventually, Earl of Romney purchased the estate from Thomas Jefferson’s great, great, great grandfather. The earl named the property Romney Estate which is now known as the Romney Manor (1629) “Home of the Caribelle Batik”.
Upon completing the self guided tour of the garden, I entered into “The Red House” where I was greeted by a tour guide. The tour was short and sweet. There wasn’t much to see in the small to medium sized rooms filled with the basic necessities made with wooden antique furniture. However, the tour guide lead me to a room that was decorated with beautifully designed Batik linens that were hanging on the wall.
The best part of my tour was that I had a chance to meet the Batik Artist who was sitting there working on her next masterpiece to be sold in the gift shop. Honestly, I can’t recall her name, however, I do remember her warm eyes, friendly smile and steady hand as she meticulously designed her next work of art. She momentarily stopped to take a photo with me and then went right back to work.
Visiting the Romney Manor was a treat! I really enjoyed walking through the garden, and meeting the Batik Artist! If you are visiting St. Kitts and Nevis be sure to visit Romney Manor (1626) Home of the Caribelle Batik!
