Copper Mine National Park: Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
My day began with me sitting around the pool reading my magazine. Sound Bay Villa, the place where I was staying was spacious, comfortable and the interior design had a tropical theme.
There were an open concept kitchen and dining area with large windows, four bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms, a laundry room with the latest washer and dryer machines, a large porch that was semi-covered for those who prefer to sit in the shade and several beach chairs for occupants who desire to sunbathe. There was a driveway that could hold two cars, and of course, my favorite part of the villa was the pool. That’s where I was when I received a phone call from my tour guide. He was on his way to pick me up. Once he arrived, we were on our way to the Copper Mine National Park.
There wasn’t much to see here. Although, for some reason, I had previously requested that the Copper Mine National Park would be a part of my visit to Virgin Gorda. There were two ruins and a large green sign that asked visitors not to remove anything from the site. The remaining structures were the last of what was a once thriving Virgin Gorda Mining Company that existed in the 1800’s.
The Copper Mine National Park was once abundant in minerals, copper ore, gold and other natural resources that were mined and shipped to the United Kingdom. The workers who operated the mine were men, women, and children. It took approximately 200 workers to keep the mine functioning on a daily basis. The site became the property of the National Park on March 28, 2003. There were panoramic views of the ocean and a plethora of plant life that was beautiful. The temperature was 90 degrees, and there wasn’t any shade. Therefore, my next stop was Mad Dog Café.
Edith, the Owner of Mad Dog Café, had a pleasant personality. She told me all kinds of funny stories while serving refreshments. The open-air café, located on the top of the world renown Baths. There was music playing lightly in the background. The breeze blew through generously and kept the restaurant cool. I stayed at Mad Dog Café for a while. It was undoubtedly a great place to hang out and grab refreshments! Afterward, I returned to the Sound Bay Villa.
The evening was slowly coming in. The sunset had bright orange and red color. It was beautiful to watch. I stood there enjoying the views of the ocean from the porch. After eating my dinner, I slipped back into my swimsuit, sat by the pool and continued reading my magazine. Today my schedule was light, and I savored every moment of relaxation.
