2015 Holiday Windows Display: New York, NY
Some of the most creative works of art in New York City are the 2015 Holiday Window Displays. It is an annual tradition for New Yorkers and tourists to integrate visiting the eye-catching and in some cases interactive animations of the themes of the various holiday window displays. They are located on the exterior glass windows of major department stores such as Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Henri Bendel, Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue, and Macy’s.
The Holiday Windows is a self-guided walking tour that can either begin or end at Barney’s on 60 Street to Macy’s on 34th street on Herald Square. I say this because if you are heading uptown, then I would suggest starting your tour from Macy’s and walk your way up to Barneys and vice versa. Since I will be going shopping afterward; I officially began my journey at Barneys.
Barneys Holiday Windows were unique. This year, the theme was “Chillin Out.” This windows featured a massive block of ice carved into a ski slope. There was a penguin that was skiing on top of a car as it continued down the hill. This window display was cute and creative. To maintain the ice temperatures were probably below freezing inside the window. Brr! My next stop was Bloomingdales.
The theme of the Bloomingdale’s Holiday Windows was “Holiday through the Senses.” The design of this window was adorable and almost gave a hint of warmer days to come. There was a combination of floral designs highlighted through mirrored sculptures. Through the power of the imagination, the concept invited spectators to experience this through all five of the senses. It was like being a child again because using my imagination was key to enjoying this window display. My next stop was Bergdorf Goodman.
Oh yes! The Bergdorf Goodman Holiday Windows are a lady’s best friend. No, this window was not decked out with diamonds. However, Swarovski crystals was a fabulous decoration for this window display! The Swarovski crystals complimented the theme “Brilliant,” which was a celebratory holiday window because it acknowledged the 120th anniversary of Swarovski. The design featured an elegant ballroom that with red walls, two armored knights who were guarding a queen who was sitting on her throne. The fun part was that everything exclusively made with Swarovski crystals! The display was stunning. My next stop was Henri Bendel.
Similarly, the Henri Bendel Holiday Windows celebrated the 120th anniversary of their department store. The theme was “A Retrospective of Renowned Fashion Illustrator Izak Zenou.” The design featured a townhouse that appeared to have tenants. There were te and brown striped hatboxes and packaging, in addition to the other whimsical decorations. The Holiday Windows were honorable because it recognized Zenou for designing them for the past twenty years. Congrats! My next stop was Tiffany & Co.
Theatergoers will undoubtedly love the Holiday Windows display at Tiffany & Co! This display was not named. However, the theme focused on 19th-century miniature theatres. The heritage exemplified in the luxurious setting of snow-covered palaces, fairytale landscapes, jewelry adorned grand staircases and new treasures were some of the icons that were used to represent theatre of its time. It was luxuriously beautiful! My next stop was Saks Fifth Ave.
“The Winter Palace” was the theme for Saks Fifth Avenue Holiday Windows. It features an icy Colosseum, a frozen Great Barrier Reef with a diver swimming down to it and a snowy Great Wall of China. I loved how the theme incorporated human-made wonders and landmarks. There were 225,000 illuminated lights and elements. Superb! My next stop was Lord & Taylor.
“A Few of Our Favorite Things,” was the theme for the holiday windows for Lord & Taylor. The display deliciously focuses on a raised street level gingerbread house with lots of gingerbread men standing in front on it. “A Few of Our Favorite Things,” was favored among the children who were there; especially since they asked their parents if they could buy them a gingerbread cookie afterward. Lol! My next stop was the iconic Macy’s Herald Square’s Holiday Windows.
I loved this one! The Macy’s Holiday Windows was one of my favorites. The theme was “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” It celebrated the 50th anniversary of the cartoon classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas” that was created by Charles Schultz many years ago. It was fun to see the recreation of the famous characters that each wore their signature expressions on their faces. The renowned piano scene was very interactive because spectators could press the piano keys by touching the window. That was cool.
Overall, I had a fabulous time checking out the 2015 Holiday Windows Display! If you are going to venture out on this fun self-guided tour, make sure that you are wearing comfortable walking shoes and bundle up!
